At Venturi Cardiology, we take pride in delivering critical cardiology services to the North West of England. Today we honour that heritage by looking at some key figures who helped develop the practices and research we benefit from today. These Manchester cardiologists are just a few great names in cardiology who served the North West.

Geoffrey Howitt

Geoffrey Howitt was born in 1926. He trained at Manchester University and then began his cardiology career at the Manchester Royal Infirmary. Following basic training, he joined the RAF. After finishing his service, he became a senior house officer at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary before returning to Manchester first as an honorary consultant and then the head of the cardiology department.

During his time as a clinician, he was highly sought-after. He served as a fellow at the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and the Royal College of Physicians of London, later becoming a regional adviser. He was also a member of the British Cardiac Society, the Association of Physicians of Britain and Northern Ireland, and the Manchester Medical Society 1966.

He is remembered by the London Royal College of Physicians after he died of pancreatic cancer.

Nayyar Naqvi

Nayyar Naqvi was born in India, reportedly between 1944/45. After graduation from Dow Medical College in Rampur, he moved to Manchester in 1968. He worked as a clinician at the Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals. There, he spent 12 years setting up his own cardiology practice.

During this time, he continued to work for the NHS whilst fundraising for clinical technologies in low-income and rural areas. He served the Manchester community for over 50 years before retiring in 2021.

He was awarded the title Honorary Clinical Teacher at the University of Manchester School of Medicine, British Heart Foundation Lecturer, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire. He also became a fellow at the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh, the European Society of Cardiology, and the American College of Cardiology. His retirement was marked with an OBE and a Wigan star.
