Heart Palpitations

What are heart palpitations?

Heart palpitations are heartbeats that suddenly become more noticeable. Your heart may feel like it’s pounding, fluttering or beating irregularly. They can last anything from just a few seconds to minutes. You may also feel these sensations in your throat or neck.

Most of the time, they’re caused by stress and anxiety, or because you’ve had too little sleep, too much caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. However, if these palpitations last longer than a few seconds, or are associated with other symptoms, there may be some underlying medical concerns. If your palpitations are accompanied by dizziness, fainting, shortness of breath, or chest pain, we recommend that you have a consultation with a cardiologist as soon as possible.

Treatments for heart palpitations

When you meet with one of our consultant cardiologists they will ask you lots of questions in order to understand your family history, lifestyle and any triggers to your symptoms. They will probably then want to carry out an ECG, and possibly an echo (echocardiogram). Depending on the outcome of these tests, they may want to carry out further diagnostics. However, for many people avoiding certain triggers may be enough to remove the symptoms. Either way, we will support you with further screenings and can provide a bespoke treatment plan tailored to you.

We see both privately insured and self funding patients.

Please see our packages for self funding rates. We offer video consultations for patients who do not want to travel.
